Is it better to have tighter CAS timings with an AMD system, or a faster DDR speed?

Older AMD's w/o memory controller on die - faster DDR, mem and core 1:1
Newer cores - tighter CAS mem and core can be run asynch (5:4, 3:2, etc.)

Every kit tested showed MHz > Latency.
