quick memory question

I have 1gb of memory or two 512mb sticks and I have run into a recent problem since I changed motherboards (long story). My first stick of memory boots up great in the new system but when I add the second stick the computer hangs at the bios. The second stick was working in my old motherboard along with the first one. Could it be because its one sided module? I don't think that would matter.
