Quick math help...

A 32 foot beam is cut into two pieces; one piece is two feet longer than the other. How long are the two pieces?

How do you do using algebra?

X+(X+2)=32?

If so, why can't I figure this damn thing out. Argh.
 
I can't figure it out after that though. Something isn't making sense. I know the answer is 17 and 15, but I can't remember how to do the math to it.

Bloody hell.
 
1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1=15
1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1=17

15+17= 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1 = 32.

x + x + 2 = 32
take 2 from both sides x + x (or 2x) = 30
Divide both sides by 2
x = 15 (30/2)

Thus one is X, or 15, the other is X+2, or 17.
