My ECS k7s5a died on me so I am going to replace it with a shuttle AK35GTR. All of my drivers are on my hard drive so I'm thinking the installation will be fairly easy. Is there more to it than installing the software that comes with my new board and booting up and setting the bios? I won't have to reinstall my OS will I?
As you can tell I am fairly new at this.

Thanks for any help.

Some people claim to having no problems when swapping motherboards but reinstalling your OS is the preferred method.

I appreciate your help.
Is there anyway to reinstall my OS without formatting? I prefer to keep it as simple as possible. If it's going to be a big hassle to change motherboards I will just order another k7s5a.

One more question. If I end up getting the same board again (but a new one) I shouldn't have to do anything exapt adjust the bios settings right?

Thanks again for any help.

Jhill:
What OS are you using? As was mentioned, formatting and replacing the OS is the best method. However, it may not be necessary in all cases. Yes, if you replaced the board with the same make/model you should be fine except for BIOS settings. There are procedures that I have used with some
success to avoid reloading while using Win98. I have tried to change boards with XP twice three times though with only one success. If you are running XP you could try booting directly into Safe Mode on the initial boot. If you get that far you can then restart and boot normally and let the OS find additional hardware. If you can't get to Safe Mode in XP then you are most likely going to have to reload. Win98 is a bit different and the odds improve slightly. Again, this is from my experience and YMMV.

Use floppy boot disk type a:\deltree c:\*.*
it will ask you a question before deleting anything. well say yes to anyfile[not folder]
on drive C: include your system file [ io.sys, command.com, etc] also say yes to c:\windows
and say noy to anythng else unles you want to delete it, I'd delete c:\Program Files too.
It works unless you use NTFS format. And then you can easily boot your CD installer and reinstall the OS.
you still need to reinstall all of your program though.

Another choice you can try, say yes to delete any files on c:\ but not the c:\windows.
Try to install the OS after that, if you are lucky you don't have to reinstall your programs.

But first, before you try those to above just simply try to put the new mobo in, you may have a surprissed that you don't have to do anything others than wait for the computer while it copy new driver for the system.

gluck with your project
