Quick home network hookup (wall jack to router)... would this work?

I'm running a Cat5 cable from a wall jack in my upstairs living room down to my router in my downstairs office. Based on the diagram below, I'd prefer to do Option #2 for aesthetics (2 wall jacks) but don't know if it will work w/ the extra jack + patch cable.

Would either of these work, or do I need to plug it straight in like #1, or do I need anything else? Thanks!

As said above, they are electrically the same. #2 shows a more professional
job which is the best way to do it.

Great, thanks guys. That's what I was hoping since the living room looks really nice with the wall jack upstairs, and I thought my office downstairs would have this stupid cable hanging down over the wall. Glad to hear I can connect wall jack to wall jack and feed the router to the upstairs jack via the small patch cable.... will make my downstairs office look as nice as the living room. :)
