quick help with which Athlon to get

Gorgonzola

i dont have a great understanding of this, as i only read CPU/Mobo articles when i am about to upgrade. I have read that some athlons use 100Mhz FSB while others use the 133Mhz FSB. i am planning on getting a Iwill KK266 (KT133A) with 256mb of pc133 sdram. i was thinking about getting a 1.2Ghz athlon. is there 2 versions of a 1.2Ghz athlon (one for 100mhz FSB and one for 133Mhz FSB)? if so, are the 133mhz ones labelled differently?

am i on the right track? or missing something completely?

thanks for any insight! 🙂

Yes there is a 100FSB of the 1200, however, overclocking the FSB, and reducing the multipliers, would fix this, even if you don't get a 133FSB. I think most 133 parts are listed as Athlon-c.

You are correct, there are two different versions of the processor. Most places will say whether or not it's a 200Mhz FSB or 266Mhz FSB (double pumped memory means that PC100 = 200Mhz, PC133 = 266Mhz). So since you're getting PC133 RAM, I would recommend finding a chip that has a 266Mhz FSB.

Here's one of my favorites: Newegg.com

there are two version of the ATHLON / THUNDERBIRD.
the older one is labeled or called B and runs FSB 100/200, the actual one is C and runs 133/266.
Since you're going to buy new hardware for the system forget about the B-version, C is what you want.
In case you want to overclock, the stepping of the cpu will be an important factor. Rely on the guys in the forum for overclocking and processors and ask them. I don't know which one here would be the best because I don't overclock.

thanks for the speedy replies! this is why i love this forum so much. 🙂

so i guess you would have to use DDR ram to achieve the 266mhz FSB number. but from what i understand it currently isn't worth the extra money for DDR if your on a tight budget?

Nope! If you use PC133 SDRAM (or PC2100 DDR) it will run at 266Mhz on an Ahtlon board. 🙂

C-version will work with all actual VIA-chipsets.
If it's not actual enough the processor will run at FSB100 with it's multiplier, and that would definatly be disappointing.

Digobick, ah ok, cool, thanks for the info 🙂

wasnlos, what do you mean by an actual VIA-chipset? the Iwill board has the VIA KT133A chipset, so i assume thats safe?
