Quick help with a comp prob

this is on a IBM netvista, running a 900mhz celeron and onboard everything, an older intel chipset. its ranomly either rebooting or freezing on the win xp boot screen. i've tried everything, unhooking everything but hard drive, even reset the bios settings to default. hard drive utility turned up no errors, and still freezes/reboots on a fresh format/install... and no, the cmos jumper isnt stuck on the reset mode hehe 😛 (already checked) the question is, what is fried here?

ed: oh yeah, it boots a different win 95 drive just fine, but wont boot anything win 98 and up...how can a computer less than 2 years old be incompatible with win xp?
