i have an AMD Athlon MP 1800+ microprocessor and am need to buy a new motherboard.
i am looking at the Biostar M7NCG 400.

it's specs say it supports "AMD Athlon/Athlon XP/Duron Processors". does this include my micro
seeing as it's MP (i would want to be sure)

thanks
mike

Hi Mike and Welcome to the Forums!

Looks to me like your CPU is a socket A, so yes it will "physically" fit into the mobo. But I'd be cautious. That mobo looks to be a mATX (usually limited BIOS adjustments in them) and you'll wanna be sure it's got a multiplier adjustments in the BIOS. Since, it's a mobile CPU the mobo may not be able to correctly assign the proper multi and may therefore default to something like 6 (multi) leaving you with an 800mhz chip.

I looked up the mobo and didn't see anymulti adj in the BIOS. That doesn't mean it's not there, perhaps I just missed it or it wasn't mentioned in the article I saw.

If there's no multi adj in the BIOS, perhaps there are modded BIOS which will allow the cpu to be recognized and assigned the correct multi.

That board has overclocking support in the bios and that MP will likely default to the lowest multi as Fern said, so even if the board won't properly ID the CPU and uses a 5x or 6x multi you can manually set it up to run it's rated speed.

hey guys thanks for replying. obviously i've worked long hours on this since it's my first time replacing the motherboard.
i think that i was misled. I was using FreshDiagnose, the diagnostic software, which told me that my processor is AMD Athlon MP.
but i don't think it is, in my SYSTEM PROPERTIES in control panel it only says "AMD Athlon(tm) processor". with DirectX Diagnostic Tool
it says i have an "AMD Athlon(tm) Processor, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.5GHz". and when i searched online i found no pages that listed my
model as having an AMD Athlon MP" processor. so i think that FreshDiagnose is wrong in its diagnostics.

i'm think i'm going to get the motherboard and hope my processor is not an MP, and if it is i'll deal with it then.

ok, now i'm really confused. CPUZ says under Processor name: "AMD Athlon MP" under Code Name: "Palomino" under Specification : "AMD Athlon(tm) Processor"

it also has a little logo on the upper right of the same window that says AMD Athlon MP. so now i'm thinking it is an MP. i'm not sold on that model motherboard. i just like the slot config cause it works with my current box. should i get a motherboard that says it has MP compatibility or should i go with this one and tweek it like you guys are saying. in my search for a motherboard i haven't seen any list Athlon MP specifically.
