Quick DVD player with HDMI Cable question

So I have an older receiver without HDMI input/output, is it possible with most dvd players to use the HDMI cable to connect to the TV and an audio cable to connect to the receiver, I will be in the market for a new receiver in the future, but not at this time.

Yes. I just upgraded to an HDMI receiver but previously used one that didn't have HDMI so I used the TOS connection (with HDMI from the source to the TV to carry the video). TOS, digital coax, and analogue can be used depending on what you prefer and the connections available on your receiver/DVD.

I'd say it depends on the model of your DVD player, but I've never heard of one that will output video on HDMI and audio via RCA simultaneously. Can you use component cables for video? They'll provide pretty much the same quality as HDMI (unless HDCP is an issue, and it isn't for standard DVDs), and you could hook those directly to your TV or your receiver, with audio through RCA cables. At the very least it will tide you over until you get a new receiver, but the only advantage of HDMI at this point is for HDCP material (well, that and having 1 cable as opposed to 3-5).

I am planning on getting the DVD player thats why I asked (otherwise I would have just tried it)...so it seems like it depends on the player...

and thats true i assume most new dvd players also have the component capability so I could use that

Actually....I am not in agreement with everyone here. It does depend on the player but generally speaking all the outputs are active at the same time. So yes, you can usually connect via HDMI to your TV and optical/digital coax to your receiver.

What DVD player were you thinking about getting?

I think most of them (if not all) are going to allow you to run HDMI video and some other form of digital audio at the same time. (That's what I'm doing with my Panasonic S77 at the moment)

You might think about getting in on one of the HD-DVD player deals since they're quite affordable now.

For example, I think Amazon has the Toshiba A3 for $199 including 10 HD-DVDs. The Toshiba players are supposed to be quite good at upconverting as well, so that would give you some benefit to your existing DVD collection.

I currently have my A2 running HDMI to my TV and optical to the receiver...even though I have an HDMI receiver.
works fine

I agree with YoYo--at current prices, it makes sense to buy an HDDVD player as they have become comparable to high-quality upconverting DVD players. considering the 10 free HD movies....you get the HD player for free + change
