Quick dumb question: Will the motherboard for servers (those tyan boards, for ex) work with regular ATX case?

Server boards are larger. Even in a big case, some modification will likely be necessary. Depending on the case, thre's a chance that it won't fit at all.

Some of the issues are things like the drive cage, fan racks, where the ATX connector is located (relative to the drive cage ...)

The other issue may be the power supply. Many / most/ all(?) server boards (versus "workstation" boards require an SSI compatible power supply. SSI has an additional power connector (total three - the 20-24 pin ATX, four pin supplemental, and a 6-8 pin supplemental ... something like that).

Your average computer place isn't going to have an SSI compliant supply. The last one I bought I got from Motherboard Express (www.motherboardexpress.com).

Good Luck

Some may require a case that can accept an extended ATX mobo. Most cases can accept an ATX mobo up to about 12x10, anything beyond that may require an oversized case - the Silverstone Berserker for example. The case specs should state the max mobo size. There are some fairly low and deep (20" or more) cases out there that can take long mobos. I think Enermax has a few in their line.
