Quick digital audio question.

I have a Panasonic S1 plasma TV. It has digital out on it. I know this normal just outputs stereo, but if I run just a hdmi cable from a blu-ray player will the 5.1 channel come out the digital out on the TV?

It will depend on your TV, but both the TVs that I've had that had digital out could pass Dolby 5.1, although I guess I don't know if they were able to after receiving it through HDMI.

I believe you will only get 2 channel PCM from most input devices. It depends on your input device and if your connection is infested with HDCP.

The only way to find out is to try.

The input will be a Toshiba BDX2500. I will try as soon as the hdmi cables I ordered come in.

Most TVs will only output 5.1 from OTA HDTV (coaxial input). All the other inputs get downsampled to 2.0, even if they're originally carrying 5.1 sound.

If you want 5.1, go from the source directly to your receiver...

That was what I was afraid of. I am out of digital inputs on my receiver, so I either have to buy a switch or a new receiver. I will know for sure in a few days though.
