Anand as well as other review sites have gone over AMD's morphological AA, which seems like it performs well. The caveat being it sometimes makes text appear blurry.
Well I've been testing this on my system using games like Civ, WoW, Black Ops, and on 3DMark Vantage and here are some brief comments:
1. Morphological AA seems to have the same performance hit as 8X MSAA, give or take.
2. On games that are also made for consoles or ported from consoles, Morph AA looks great and the text is still legible because the font size in these games are fairly large.
3. However, on games made primarily for the PC like Civ and Wow, the text looks like absolute garbage. These games tend to have very small text that become blurry and borders on the point of being painful to look at. Yes it's just that horrible and I had to turn Morph AA off within a minute. I'm not really sure Anandtech's review didn't explore this downside seriously enough because the effect is glaringly obvious. Even 4x MSAA is vastly superior for games with small fonts.
Since I play a mix of both types of games, I have decided to keep using 4x MSAA for now because I don't want to keep toggling Morphological AA on and off all the time. If AMD can find a way to get text legible in Morphological AA, only then would I reconsider.
For reference here is my system:
Windows 7 64-bit
Intel i5-750 oc'd to 3.675 GHz
G.Skill DDR3-1600 4GB ram
Gigabyte P55-UD3R
ASUS 6850 oc'd to 940/1150 core/memory
Catalyst 10.10d with Hotfix
22" Samsung SynchMaster 226BW (1680x1050)
