Quick car question! Regarding Oil.

More than a month ago, I checked my car's oil and it was kinda black and it's 1000 miles before it's due to be changed. So, today I checked it again and it fell below the LOW point which obviously I have insufficient oil in the engine. It was exactly between the High and Low point the last time I checked. How would it possibly gone way below the Low point in 1.5 months when it had been between the High and Low point for the last 5 months.

Should I be worried??

Check. I was wondering if it was leaking too. 😀

Signs of engine burning oil is black smoke coming out from the exhaust right??

I haven't changed the oil in my Blazer for like 8000 miles, heh.. I'm lazy. It has Mobil 1 in it so that makes me feel 10% better about it. Of course, I only paid $1000 for the thing so I don't really care.

/end of random story

I'm using dino oil. I've been doing alot of short drives. I've driven 2.5k miles since the last change. I think I better do it before the engine is dry. 😀

Usually blue and you can smell it.

:Q

Your car's engine is not going to last long. What kind of car is it?

You didn't check your oil in a month and a half and you're surprised the oil level moved? Christ, you're supposed to keep it at FULL all the time.

Change your oil. NOW. It is full of garbage.

I hope it's not a new car, you don't deserve it. :disgust:

engine burning oil is white smoke coming out of exhaust. You might want to get a compression test done on your cylinders to see if your piston rings are OK. Blowby gases thru the rings would make your oil black quicker than usual, as well as letting oil into the combustion chamber.

Usually blue and you can smell it.

Just put your mouth on the exhaust pipe and inhale. If you start spinning to the left, then it's just gasoline, but if you spin to the right, it's burning oil.

Well, when you post a thread about how Mitsubishi sucks and your engine has breathed its last intake, and it's going to cost 2500$ for a new one...

I'm going to pull up this thread, and we're all going to laugh at you.

Thanks for the replies!! I'm going to Firestone now. Don't laugh. That's the nearest mechanic I can find. I can't do anything cause I don't know how to change and it's 26f out there. 😛

People say blue, but they actually mean white. I have never seen smoke come out of a tailpipe that actually looked blue. It's white or a light gray color, even though people say it's blue.

I won't. 🙂 This car is going out pretty soon. I got this car for 3500 man. It's cheap for a car like that. 😀

No. _coolant_ burning is white. Burning oil is grey or blue. Every car makes some amount of white smoke when started in the cold though, if it's still making white smoke once the engine is warm, then you need to watch for coolant leaks.

Easy (and free) way to check for burning oil: Pull your spark plugs and see if they are fouling. You can usually tell between oil fouling and fuel fouling.

Pretty sure coolant is not leaking. The reservoir is just below the full point.......Alright.nothing to see.....move along. 🙂 I'm going to a mechanic.

Why kill it just by being lazy though? You know it is going to break down sometime, probably at a time when you're really going to care. I don't know about you, but 3500$ isn't a small chunk of change...

Oh, and about the smoke.. It is indeed blue.

I mean.. it's not like it's sky blue or something, lol.. It's a smokey grey-blue. Coolant burning is white, but don't mistake the steam type stuff comming out of the exhaust pipe before everything is warmed up to be smoke.

Just look for it next time you go down the street. You'll see some piece of sh!t minivan or other automobile that could double as a mosquito fogger. Look for it at lights, it's particularly bad on acceleration.

Being lazy?? Where did I say I was being lazy?? I check my car every month. I'm not really a car guy but I check the oil and all every other month. I just got back from the oil change. The guy said everything was cool and I needed an oil change anyway.

3500 isin't a small chunk of cash. I bought it with half of my own savings. 😛 I'm taking care of it as if it's my baby.

If this is taking care of your car like it's a baby, I sure as hell hope you never have kids.

Once a month is NOT satisfactory.... You should never let your oil dip below the full mark. Always keep it full....

I don't drive often. That's why I never really take a look at the oil.
