Can a retail purchased version of BC2 be added to a steam account (as in full steam integration, not just the "shortcut")? Or only the ones purchased through steam?

Has to be purchased through steam. Only Valve games work that way.

The reasoning is: you buy through steam and you pay for the cost of the servers providing bandwith and data to you. No profit for valve = no advantage for you

Actually any game using Steamworks works that way, like Alien vs Predator, Supreme Commander 2, Metro 2033 for example.

But yeah, BC2 doesn't use Steamworks so it will be nothing more then a shortcut if you buy it somewhere else.

Thanks. That's what I wanted to know!
