When replacing your front brake pads, are you suppose take the lid off the master cylinder?

I was told by one person that you should because it makes it easier to compress the piston and not to bother by others.

I googled the topic, some auto sites say that you should and others don't mention it at all.

Thanks in advance.

It's easier to compress the caliper, but you don't have to do it. I always do.

Actually, I did my front and rear brakes the last two weekends - I had to suck some fluid out so it wouldn't overflow.

If you've added fluid since your last job, then you should. Open it up and draw out some fluid so it doesn't overflow when you compress the calipers. And make sure you compress them slowly, or it will squirt all over the place.

You don't have to if you open the bleeder valves first. Either way you should top off the fluid and bleed thoroughly until you get clear fluid. You're going to have to open the bleeders and the master cylinder anyway. What's the big deal?

Actually it's the first brake job for the car,it's my sisters.

It's also the first brake job for me...I think I can handle it though.

I just wanted to make sure that I did it the proper way.

Thanks all for the speedy responses !
