Quick! Any diff between 1.8 478 and 1.8a 478 pin?

'cause I'm ready to buy at newegg and they have a 1.8 478 pin for $179 plus free shipping and a 1.8a 478 pin for $184 + $7 shipping. I somehow thought all the 1.8 478 pins were Northwoods :-/ Let me know so I can buy! Getting a Leadtek GF4 and a Asus P4S333 in my order! 🙂 Already have my 512 Samsung PC2700 on the way from googlegear. Woooohoo!

yea, 1.8 is a willy with 256 L2 cache.
1.8a is a northwood with 512 L2 cache. i would go with the a (512k cache).

also consider 1.6a since you will get it for ~$130 shipped at newegg. its a great overclocking chip (~2.2-2.3 Ghz easily). ppl have been able to make it run @ 2.4. best bang for your money.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, but I was thinking that I have much better odds of hitting 2.4 w/o running my PCI out of spec at all with the 1.8a (just 18x133). If I can hit 2.4, I won't have to upgrade for a bit. Hmm... or maybe I should get the 1.6a since the 18a is 40% more for a roughly 10% clock speed difference (2.2GHz vs 24GHz). I guess I'll think on it for a couple more hours 🙂 Comments, suggestions welcome 🙂

which mobo you are going with ?

i am also building a system (in the process of building one).

heres what i am leaning towards

P4 1.6a - ~132
gigabyte GA-8IXP mobo - ~150
antec SX1030 w/ 300w - ~85

have the other stuff with me.

the 1.8a is ~182 (thats $50 difference, i would get a better video card or better memory for that price difference). Also, you wont see that much difference between 2.2 and 2.4 ghz to justify $50 but if you have the money, go ahead for it.

sometimes, i wonder, if the 1.8a and 2.0a retail processors from intel are overclocked 1.6a (i mean overclocked by intel) or is the 1.6a a 1.8a or 2.0a underrated ?

As said in my first post, I'm getting a P4S333 and a Leadtek GF4 4400.

Yeah, I don't really have the money - I could find something better to spend it on, I guess. Old case, 350W Enermax PSU (may be putting in more money after the upgrade to get a Zalman PSU), etc.

Prob the 1.6 are just less-rated higher performing chips... since they have to be getting decent yields. So I'd be paying for the multiplier more than anything else. I guess I'll go with a 1.6a after all 🙂

how much are you spending on the P4S333 mobo and from where ? can u recommend a cheap good case for me ?

I'm getting the P4S333 (SiS chipset unlike your gigabyte Intel chipset) for $102 shipped at newegg. I've never had a problem with the Enlight 7237 w/300W ($64 shipped at newegg), but it's not "pretty" and has mediocre airflow, but good enough for me. I like the drive rails it uses.... but then again I haven't built with any other cases. And I don't need another so I'm not going to buy another. I'll just maybe buy a quiet PSU (assuming the Intel stock fan isn't loud and I can cool my GF4 with some panaflos enough that I can take off the GF4 fans).... well after I sell my current parts 🙂

Either p4 you get just make sure its the 512 cache which is always the northwood core which is built on .13 micron size as opposed to willamette core which is .18 micron .With a little luck you'll get a "Malay".
