Quick and probably easy question...

Hey all...This may be common knowledge, but I'm just not sure of the answer to this one. I have a new graphics card on the way (HD4870), and my system is watercooled. I want to try out the card when I get it to make sure it functions correctly, but I don't want to disturb my current setup until I can get a water block for the 4870.

Now for the question...can I put the 4870 in my other PCI Express slot, hook up the power cables from my current card, and use the 4870 as my card to test it out without removing my 2900XT? Thanks.

So, I guess the problem I foresee with that plan is that the board is going to give warning beeps and refuse to POST, because you've got a card installed that doesn't have its power connectors connected.

How about if I leave the power connectors in, and connect 2 more 6 pin connectors to the new card? If I hook my monitor up to the 4870, will I be able to use that as my primary display?

If there's an option in your BIOS that will let you use the 2nd PCI-E for that purpose then yes. I have such an option (Init Display First) and I can choose between PCI, PEG, PEG (slot2) and PEG (slot3).
