I am going to build a system for when I transfer to a university and have been out of the PC hardware loop for awhile so I have no idea which motherboards are good these days.

I plan on putting an AMD processor in it, probably something in the 2Ghz area. Along with 128MB RAM (upgrading later). Onboard sound is fine, however I do not need onboard video, RAID, onboard LAN or any extras like that. I plan on connecting an IDE HDD to it and having an AGP video card and PCI LAN card in it.

As far as what I'm using the computer for, I'm a CS major so I'll be doing compiling on it, and I also would like to play Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 on it, among other games.

Can someone toss out a few quick suggestions of motherboards to look at? Thank you very much!

EDIT: Price is very important. I am on a limited budget (c'mon I'm a college student! hehe) so nothing real expensive because I won't even look at it.

For a great bang for the buck, go with the Epox 8RDA+. It is available for about $80 from Newegg. It does have onboard LAN, but it matches all of your other criteria perfectly. You may want to consider more than 128 RAM though. You could get a stick of 512 for only $70 or so. At least get 256 at any rate, even though that's on the low side.

id also throw in support for the 8rda/8rda+
get 256 or 512 megs of RAM, 128 doesnt cut the mustard anymore imho.

I've seen the 8RDA/8RDA+ mentioned before, thanks, I'll take a look at it.

True about the RAM, I'll go for 256 or 512 depending on the overall price of the system.

Hard to beat the MSI KT2 Combo L if you don't need to run a Barton or OC too much.
