I'm not looking for the best, but something that will just work. I don't network game or anything, so a high quality router isn't terribly important to me. The only reason I'm looking at a gig-e switch is for the future, so I don't have to buy another hub for a while.

My question is this, should I forget the gig-e and save my sixteen bucks, or do you think the hub will last long enough that it'll be a good investment? I've used TigerDirect before and mostly like their service, but I'm willing to use a different company if these cheap hubs are too cheap. That said, I don't want to make a big deal of this, I just want to know which of the two hubs to go with.

those are not hubs, those are switches. there is a technical difference. hubs are L1 and switches work at L2 of the OSI model.. anyways... the trendnet gigabit switch will be useless you now really if 1. you dont have cat5e or higher cables. 2. you dont have gigabit ethernet network cards installed on the computers that are connecting to the switch.

if you do not currently have anything that will support gigabit ethernet, and just get the switch, you will not see a difference, but if you will shortly get the cards and the cables if needed, then ya, go for it.

Question: a router operates at l3 of the osi model. you can't connect a switch to a cable or dsl modem and expect for your multiple computers to get on the internet and work. you must use a router.
Question: what is your goal in this upgrade? you mentioned 3 devices where each really has a different use. what would you like to do? how many computers, are they going to share stuff between each other? are they all connecting to the internet through a cable modem or something?

I have no idea what an OSI model is, I frankly have a very basic knowledge of networking stuff. But I do know that my laptop does not have gig-e, I was thinking of maybe four years from now when gig-e is standard and I'm getting a new laptop. I know switches are cheap, but still for simplicity's sake..

I'm at a university with LAN in all the dorms, so all I need is a switch, I do know that ordinarily I'd need a router or a modem/router combo. But if you can keep it simple, what's the difference between a hub and a switch, I thought switch was another name for router?

My goal is wired LAN for three laptops and maybe a printer in my room, that way I won't have to put up with the crappy wireless here (it's the first year we've had a wireless campus and the bugs are not worked out). The computers won't be sharing anything with each other, it's just internet I'm interested in.

I know that even 10Mbps would work for me, but I'm asking if the switch can be expected to last a decade, or if I should pick up an eight dollar cheapo today, and another eight dollar cheapo whenever I upgrade my laptop.
