Hi all,
I am trying to extend the range of an existing wifi network and I have some issues with 1 element of the new hardware purchased.
I purchased 3 things a few days ago
1) A bigger ariel for existing router - works great at extended the range
2) Some network/powerlines plus which provide hardwired internet to an outside summerhouse just outside of the wifi range. This also works perfectly.
3) The one which doesnt work great is the DLink Access point/repeater/bridge multi function device. DAP-1360.
This is how I have it setup
Internet via ADSL to existing Dlink router, works fine.
network cable to powerlines plugs which make their way to the summerhouse. 2 outputs from powerlines, 1 hardwired to a PC (works fine) and 1 to this Dlink access point to extende the same wifi network. The Access point can be setup as an AP, a bridge, a repeater or a bridge with AP. I have it setup as an access point. The AP has a fixed IP, uses a different channel (normal router is 1 and AP is 6), but apart from that has the same encryption type and password (WEP 128). The router has DHCP on and the AP has it turned off.
The main router uses 192.168.1.1 as it's IP address and 1.2 as the gateway. It then allocates IP addresses 192.168.1.X accordingly for a pool of 100 addresses. The Dlink AP has a fixed IP of 192.168.0.50, so I assume this is OK as no clash.
I originally ssues with one laptop connecting to the network, this was because I changed to WPA2 TKIP encryption and the laptop is question is the awful windows Vista which apparently doesn't support it. So after many hours of struggling, changing the wifi to a 'private network' in Vista and then downgrading the security type to WEP 128bit all seemed OK.
But, the AP seems to keep losing it's settings. It sees the SSID (I know it's the summer house SSID because its way out of range of the normal SSID from the main router), but I cannot connect. I try and forget/re-establish the network connection but makes no odds.
I then try to connect to the AP via cable (which is does find), but the fixed IP of '192.169.0.50' doesn't work in my browser. When I enter the Dlink CD, it eventually 'finds' the AP via the simple setup guide and then I have to re-enter the settings (2 min job). After this, it finds the router OK (manually typing IP address) in the browser via the 'advanced settings' page.
After putting the settings back, and checking connectivity, everything seems ok. Until the day after, the AP 'loses' everything again. This has happened for 2 days and my next steps are as follows;
- update the firmware from the Dlink page (there was an update 2 months ago)
- change to WEP64bit, as the AP's 'simple setup' page only has 64bit WEP so I'm wondering if there is some kind of clash.
So, my questions are;
1) Any ideas what may be causing this?
2) Does my setup sound correct?
3) Should I use this DLink device as an AP or a bridge? (I'm read on this forum and I think it should be an AP).
4) I read on forums that the IP should be fixed for the AP and DHCP off. Is this right? Do I need to fix the IP of the AP outside the range of the router?
I'm at my Mum's house in Spain and I leave in 48 hours so any quick advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Jim
