quick 4.1 speaker setup question

I just moved back home from school and I'm setting up my speakers but I have one little dumb setup question... since I don't have any room to put the rear speakers behind me, how am I supposed to set them up front of me?? I mean, should I have the front left and rear left on one side and the right front and right rear speakers on the other?
Or is it something like... front left with the rear right and front right with the rear left?

I'm asking because I currently have it setup as front left and rear left and vice versa.. and the sound doesn't seem balanced. I'm definately noticing more sound on the left.

If you're just going to have them all in front of you on your table or desk, then you might as well put the two right speakers on the right and same with the left and just use them in dual stereo.
