Quetion about IDE miniport drivers. What do they do actually?

do you know what the 4.13 IDE miniport drivers from www.viahardware do? the only way I can get soul reaver 2 to run without locking up is having them installed. Its put this little VIA icon on my taskbar and my cd-roms show up as scsi instead of IDE
