Queston about PS3 & Samsung HDTV

Hello,

This past weekend I purchased an Samsung 46" HDTV 650 series and the MGS4 PS3 bundle. When I play MGS1-3 on the PS3, the graphics are dark and grainy. Is there a setting I need to change on the PS3 (is connected via HDMI)? I'd tried adjusting the picture settings on the tv, but the graphics are the same.

I know MGS 1-3 are old games; but I was hoping the picture quality on the HDTV would equal to my standard tv (which the games look better). Anyway, anyone has any input or advice? Thanks.

Older games will tend to look worse on an HDTV actually over and SDTV. I haven't played MGS1-3 on my PS3 so I can't say but they shouldn't appear dark and grainy really. You might need to adjust the brightness on the TV for those games. I don't remember but I don't they had in the options menu a slider to adjust the brightness ingame. A lot of games nowadays are coming with that option though.

I have a PS3 and the same TV. The first thing I did when I set up my PS3 was go into the video setting and change them to 1080P setting.

All of the systems (including Xbox360 I would assume) set the video at 480 default because they don't know if you have a TV that can support 1080. So you have to go in and set the game console to the max resolution your TV can support.

I don't know what display abilities MSG3 has.... PS2 games were designed for 480 resolution because that is the max the PS can output. So playing a PS2 game on the PS3 won't suddenly give you full 1080 res. It might improve the quality of the older game so it looks better, sort of like upconverting a DVD for 1080 display, but its still 480 source.

The PS3 is set to 1080P (even try 480P with the same result). MGS4 is superb and watching regular dvd movies is great, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I just want to replay the series on the new tv with surround sound before I start on MGS4. Guess I'll go back to my old tv, problem is I'm not used to it now.

Could just be the older game isn't up to the new standards.

I plugged in the PS2 to my 46-inch Sammy 650 with the composite cables and the picture looked like utter crap. Getting some component cables should upgrade the quality a bit, but I'm spoiled now!

You should play around with the upscaling features. I've never touched them because I have a CRT, but the difference is notable with other HDTV's.

It's also partially dependent on the TV. In my experience the Sharp Aquos TV's seem to be a better job with 480i signals than Samsung. I've got the Samsung 40" 530 and the composite from my PS2 and Wii looks a little blurry it's perfectly playable but still there. Switching my Wii to component helped a lot. Using my ex's Aquos there was a difference between component/composite but it wasn't quite as noticeable.

I got the Wii component too, and it seemed to help the picture a little not not tons. For the $5 price from monoprice I figured I might as well.

You can't unselect 480p.

OP> IIRC, the upscaling settings should be in the PS menu when you load up the game.

I'll try again when I get home from work. I'd been messing around the settings for hours on both the tv and ps3, I got frustrasted and gave up. I'll post up some pics when I get the chance.
