Questions: Running/building/installation of software for a WEB SERVER

Looking to learn more on web server.

I need to build
I need to install software, and which ones?
I need to configure with my ISP?
I need to configure the settings?

I've searched google, and found somethings. But where can i find tutorials on these stuff?

I was thinking win2k3, with coldfusion, and sql server 2000(until the latest version)

with the products he's listed, doesn't seem like cost is an issue.

IMO---going with 2k3 right now is a mistake. If you want a server that's live or public, stick w/ 2k + IIS + SP3 + latest patches for now & SQL SP2. But, FYI, you can run cold fusion w/ apache, and still access ms-sql via odbc.

But judging by your questions....please don't make your server publicly available until you know how to secure it.

Other then that---it's just a matter of installing IIS on your windows box (not talking about 2k3 since i've not seen it yet)......and once IIS is installed, installing cold fusion, and making sure that IIS and Cold Fusion are set up right....which should be done automaticallly when you install CF as long as IIS is running.
 
your welcome, I actually stumbled across that site the other day when I had the same questions you do. You might want to try the networking forum here as well. There was a lot of good info and helpful people there.
 
Ok, apache is good. Cost is an issue, but if i'm going to investing.

The thing with microsoft, its easier with their GUI.

 
build a nice solid system

Easy to set up, Open source Software, very stable

would be :
Linux OS (prefferably a distro that has everything includud such as any recent redhat or mandrake distro)
Apache with PHP and Perl mods,
Your choice of SQL (PostGres is what I use, though MySQL is also good.

I would Imagine an Install for BSD or Solaris would not be much more difficult (though you may need to compile the source rather than just use binaries)
 
If your just doing really lightweight stuff then you can take a win2k machine and just install easyphp on it and it has apache, mysql, php, and myphpadmin.

A server config: Is it that important for scsi drives? Also p4, athlon xp, or wait for opteron to come down?
I'm going to be hosting some my family site, My work site, my moms realtor site, and maybe some other small sites.
All written in coldfusion with a database in the background. Thought of microsoft sql server, but if i'm going with apache, than its mysql.

Anything else?
 
I think you should learn a whole lot more before you go building a server that is not only going to be open to the net, but possibly even serving sites for people other than yourself. You may think it's a no brainer but that attitude is what makes things like this happen:

my neighboor, and good friend is a Linux certifited security expert. I think he can help me with linux, and apache security.

Do you think a system lie this would be good for hosting some sites:

Nforce 2 MB
athlon 3000 barton @400mhz
512mb x 3 or 4 @400mhz
PCI Raid
2x 120gig WD 8meg edition ($80 new each)
Sound:built in, but don't really need it
Video: cheap one
Ethernet built in. Asus 7n8x2.0 has 2 of them.

I have already:
case(supermicro sc750), mouse, keyboard
Monitor: I'll just get a splitter to switch between the server and my machine on my 2nd monitor.

Should i wait for the opteron? I know it will be better at server, but is the cost justified?
 
Would this be a good server with only 1 Hard drive:
Shuttle SN41G2 Nvidia nForce2/MCP-T 2 DDRAM FSB266/333MHz for AMD SOCKET A Processors Barebone PC FLEX ATX
I can add 1 gig ram, and a 200 gig hd, or a 36gig wd raptor drive.

It has built in everything.

For like $250 + HD.
