Questions regarding to new OS, help!

Ok, I am currently on Win 98 SE and I am preparing to install Win 2K Pro and Linux Mandrake 8.0 (linux just for fun). I have some questions regarding the steps I should take...

The first thing I am going to do is burn all my program install files and anything else to cd's so I don't have to dl all that again (on modem 🙁 ). Do all Win 98 programs work in 2k pretty much? I'm talking about ICQ, etc, regular stuff, not weird things.

So once I've done all that, I'm guessing the next step I should take is to format? Now here is where most of my questions are.. I know that Win 2k and Linux cannot share the same partition, and I'm wondering exactly how I should partition my drive so that they both install properly. I remember when I installed linux a long time ago it wanted to stick its boot loader in the first 15 megs of hard disk space in its own partition. Is that still true, or will Win 2K handle the dual boot properly? I really have no idea how to go about doing this, any help extremely appreciated here! W2K will be my main operating system, I just basically want to try out Linux.

Also, with linux, I heard Mandrake 8.1 is out, is it a good idea for me to upgrade to that? I'd have to dl the modem on ISO though...

Hrm.. what else, oh, I'll list my hardware out and you can tell me if theres anything funky I need to know (like driver issues and that kinda thing, in W2k or Linux)

Athlon Tbird 900
512 Megs DDR ram
ECS K7S5A
WD 30 GB HD
Sound Blaster Live! Value
Regular TNT2
External Modem on COM1
Philips CD Burner

I guess thats it, I know this is a lot of questions so thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks,
Tom
