Hey fellas, kind of a funny story:
About a month ago I bought a x800pro --> x800xtpe w/ VF700CU from a very reputable seller in FS/FT. I threw the card in my case, and appreciated that it was instantly recognized as a xtpe. 540/560 autodetected.
I noticed that the temps were quite high, though. I was only running 540mhz when the seller advertised 575 24/7 @ 62C, and I was getting up to 95C! Luckily I didn't just go in right away and overclock the sucker, in fact I underclocked it a little, to 520mhz.
I haven't been gaming too heavily on it, thank god... just a tiny bit in fact. But ten minutes ago I decided to straighten this all out when I found the problem right away:
The Zalman fan isn't spinning at all. I played Doom3 on an x800xtpe with a PASSIVE VF700CU. I'm not sure if this a testement to the Zalman or my great case-flow - maybe both.
Apparently the fan connector I have it attached to on the motherboard is disabled or shorted somehow, and I feel like an idiot for not checking on it when I first booted it up.
My question is this: Has 95C done any possible damage? I heard these cores don't experience heat damage until ~120C. Everything appears fine... no crashing or artifacts at all. And I can't shut down for another hour at least, so are 3-pin motherboard fan connectors hotpluggable? It would require me to disconnect it from where it is and plug it in somewhere else. Do I have to shut down?
Another question: Should I be able to use this card to play Doom3 on Ultra settings, 0xAA/16xAF @ 1280x960 comfortably (for me that's ~40 fps)? My problem right now is my CPU, it's only a Barton 3200+ and the game feels the same at low res/detail as it does high res/detail (dips into 30's, capped at 63 fps). Without a better CPU, I can't tell how "strong" this GPU really is.
This is also with Highest quality AF/textures enabled in the drivers. If anyone else has a x800xtpe/x850xt(pe), what settings did you find comfortable?
