Questions regarding CPU/GPU temps:

CPU

1. Is it absolutely necessary to clean the surfaces of the HS/F and the CPU die with alcohol prior to installation?

2. Is it bad that I sanded the CPU die? Actually, I BARELY sanded the CPU die b/c once I started noticing the stepping markings coming off, I stopped. I did not press hard at all while I sanded.

3. When applying AS5 compound, I applied a thin layer across the whole die. Many others have said to just put a small dab in the center of the cpu and then place the HS/F squarely on top. Is it wrong to apply a thin layer across the whole CPU?

The reason I ask these 3 questions is b/c my Idle temps are at 35*-37*C and Load 42-47*C. I really want to be able to push it down to Idle 29-32*C and 37-40*C Load.

Before I try reapplying AS5 or cleaning it, should I try lowering my CPU VID Control Voltage down a little?

GPU

I have my XFX 6600GT OCed to 560/1100 on stock hs/f. My idle temps are 57*C according to Nvidia software/settings. Is that high? Any way to lower it w/o buying a new HS/F for it?

Thanks for any advice!

All your temps seem to be fine. I wouldn't worry about any of them.

I don't know if sanding your cpu is bad, I haven't heard of anyone doing it. I don't particularly think there is any reason to though.

The blob in the middle is how most people apply AS5, but the way you did it should be fine as well. I don't feel that you need to reapply it with your current temps. If your cpu is stable at lower voltages then by all means lower the voltage.

Sanded your CPU!?!??!

Yes, but barely...only did just a little very lightly....to get out any of the inconsistencies.

In fact, for a lot of older CPUs (PIII), people would sand them to get the top layer off so that better contact can be made between the hs/f and the cpu heatspreader.

Now I gues people just clean w/ alcohol and rub some AS5 into it or something.

1) Yes, preferably w/ 90+%i sopropyl
2) Could be if you used low grit paper. That would create a very uneven surface for the HS to make good contact with.
3) No.
Your temps are good.

If you Google, lapping cpu, several old tutorials will come up. I have read them.

The temp drop was in the order of 1 to 2C iirc.

It is not a reccomended proceedure.

oic, ok then, thanks!

Forgot to mention your gfx card. The temps are A-OK. To lower it, if your case allows, put an intake fan in. Should, in most cases, blow right at the gfx card introducing cooler room air into the gpu cooler.
