I was reading another thread about politics and philosophies. I got to thinking about it and thought I would post my own thread.
It seems that the beginnings of our country (America) were rather ghastly. Taking of land by the settlers (With the kings consent). Legalized slavery from the beginning up until the civil war. Not even to think about the social problems that persisted. It seemed the solution to some of the problems was for the country to unify and become a nation that was responsible for its own citizens and its own authority. One of the great things is that they had the foresight to allow people to have their own freedoms, something that is just being realized within the last century by some of our citizens. It seems like there have been some great intellectual principals that have guided our leaders through out our short history, even if they were not practiced in reality or common living. To me it seems that the thing that has made equality and the standard of living in America and the world so good is technology. The more technology there is the cheaper it becomes as it ages. Soon most anyone would be able to get it. It started with the industrial revolution and continued on into other things. Now most people are able to get real things that will help them live better lives. Things like heat in the winter, a/c in the summer, automobiles to get from a to b, a stable roof for shelter, running water, enough food, you get the idea. I?ll admit that early technology was crude and some unhealthy to use. (Think mining, steam, ironworkers dealing with such terrible working conditions). It seems that technology has finally become great enough that people?s lives are no longer at such great risk when they utilize these technologies. Though they are not perfect and most still need improvement. (So they will become better, cheaper, reliable.)
Did philosophy make these things come about?
Are we able to better live out philosophy?s ideals now because of technology?
Does the living out of philosophy make it even easier to do so as time moves forward? In essence becoming a cycle?
Has intellectual proclivity increasing in today?s society? (Not just going to college and getting a degree.) Your answer? Is it a good thing?
Do people today want what they want regardless of the philosophical reasons/princaples for or against such things and is it worse today then it was in our history?
Philosophy is an idea while much of life is based in the physical realm, do these two things correlate?
Why does 1% of the population own most of the wealth in the world society?
How can those that have not become those that have some? Will philosophy and/or technology make it possible?
I think that Aristotle said that the meaning of life is happiness, if he is correct then should it be attainable by everyone?
Thanks for reading and or commenting.
