Questions, questions, I got fan questions...

OK, so I just got this new system. Athlon Blue Menaie 750 TBird@1050. Pretty sweet.

Stuck into a Fong Kai case. Case came with a 90mm exhaust fan and a 120mm intake fan, plus the PS fan.

The 120mm fan was LOUD. I mean REALLY loud. Sounds like a freaking plane taking off or something. So I ditched it and replaced it with the 80mm fan out of my old Dell.

So, here are my questions:

1. Someone said that bigger is better, since a large fan will spin slower to move the same amount of air, hence will be less noisy. That sounds great, but does ot actually work in practice? How do you get the 120mm fan to spin slower and quieter?

2. The 80mm fan I got from my Dell (JMC/DA-TECH, 12V, .15A brushless) is very quiet. Can hardly hear it. The 90mm fan (T&T, 12V .32A) is much, much louder. Why?

3. The 50mm fan on my Vantec HSF is the loudest fan in my system. High pitched, irritating noise. IS there something quieter out there? Should I consider replacing the entire HSF?

4. The entire system is just too damn noisy. Any suggestions for how to quiet it down without oosing too much cooling?

If you don't mind giving up some of that juicy overclock, I bet you could get away with much quieter fans. The Panasonic "Panaflo" fans come in a variety of output/RPM. The "L1A" variety is known for being very quiet compared to other fans of a given size. First place that comes to mind for them is Teamawe. If you wanted to get a different heatsink, and if you can lay hands on one, an Alpha 6035 with the proper SocketA clip would be nice. You could run a Panaflo L1A 60mm fan on it, but I doubt you'd be able to stay at 1050MHz, unless that is a really choice chip.

The Anandtech Distributed-Computing Team is trying to rustle up some more members, and I don't mean to be pushy but your rig would really help. If you're interested, come on over to the Distributed Computing Forum and ask about the projects, or click the "Got Cow?" link in my sig, or check out the FAQ put together by Paulson (hey, we're reforming the guy, ok...? ;))
here. That goes for all other readers too, why not give back to Anandtech in the form of some otherwise-wasted CPU cycles? Besides, you know you want the cute cow icon in your System Tray... ;)
