Questions pertaining to the Xbox 360

Ok, I am in the market for a new Xbox 360. The main reason is Madden 09 and Fable 2. I have held off long enough. Of course I have held off this long hoping the RROD would be fixed. And quite honestly, I am not even sure it is.

Oh, and I have looked through countess threads here, but it seemed to confuse me more than help me.

Now here are my questions...

1) What are the differences in the Arcade ? Pro ? and the Elite ?
2) I *read* that the Elite comes with the Falcon ?
3) When does Jasper come and will it totally prevent RROD ?
4) Which ones definitely has HDMI ? I WANT THIS !

I only get to purchase consoles about once a year, not something I can really run out and keep purchasing. This is what worries me. I know Microsoft has the whole warranty thing, but that seems more like a PITA to me than it does good.

I will be picking one up within a week, so please help me out here.

And look out for the Baltimore Ravens in the Anand league !! My team 🙂

1: No HD/20 GB (soon to be 60GB) HD/ 120 GB HD - there are other small differences but the HD size is basically it (get the Pro). A price drop is coming, so if you can wait, you'll probably save a chunk of cash.
2: It should, but even if it does, it's not Elite specific.
3: This Fall? Probably.
4: All new ones have HDMI. The Elite comes with the "official" MS HDMI cable, though, which is just an HDMI cable + optical audio.
5: Isn't this all answered in the FAQs?
6: Get the 360 expecting the RRoD. If you don't get it, great. If you do, no big deal - the return/fixing process is simple and you'll be out a console for maybe 3 weeks. Or buy at Costco or the like with a lax return policy so you can just swap it for a new one same-day.

7. What are the different versions of the Xbox 360?

Please see this Wikipedia entry for the different retail configurations.

The current general rule of thumb is to get the Falcon version (175 watt power brick) for any version. Get the Elite if you feel you need 120GB of space to download movies, TV Shows or other content from Live...or if you just prefer black. Get the Premium/Pro 20GB version otherwise. Don't get the Arcade unless you just want to replace a current 360.

<snip>

9. How do I mitigate the risk of getting a RROD or other failure with the 360?
- Be sure to purchase a Falcon version of the 360. The original version had failure rates as high as 30%. The Falcon version failure rates is reportedly less than 10%. All 360s currently in production use the Falcon chipset. You can also recognize it by the wattage used - 175W.
- Purchase your 360 at Costco or Sam's Wholesale Club. Both stores have lifetime warranties.
- Purchase an extended warranty/replacement from the retail store/website you purchased your 360 from.
- Don't purchase a used unit unless you like to play Russian Roulette.

Cliffs:
They all have HDMI, they all should be Falcon, differences in models are color and hard drive space. Don't know about Jasper but you don't need to wait (the Falcons are much better than the original release.)

Would it be wise just to go with the Elite ? Not sure why, but I prefer *top end models*

A good while ago, on Anand I believe, was a article about the serial numbers or something that can tell you which had the Falcon. Is this right ?

Im just trying to make sure I get a Falcon.

Edit: I see it now, from Aeroengy. The whole 175w deal.

The Elite isn't really worth the extra money now, especially since they put the 60 GB drive in the standard model. One benefit is that it comes with the audio dongle that allows you to use HDMI video and optical audio together. Without that, you have to remove the plastic casing from the standard A/V cable to use HDMI with optical audio.

Wow no one scolded for not reading the sticky???? You guys are getting lax!! 😛

Personally I would try and snag one of the pro's for $299 before the 60GB comes out at $350. That or get the 60GB at $350 IMHO I don't think it's worth the premium to get the elite, unless you are dead set on getting the black, or you have to make sure you have the "best" or most expensive one out.

I assume your talking of the method that I seen on Youtube ? The guy took a screwdriver and popped it off.

I did read the sticky  Now that I know its there. But there is no mention of 360 in the thread title, therefore it didn't come up under search 🙂

But I will add this, AWESOME JOB Queasy. For the info in that thread.

I know, just slap me for not finding it. I would

By the way mugs...lets hope my Ravens have the same type of game that the Giants did against NE. Tomorrow night we get redemption in a *meaningless preaseason game*

Thanks for the info mugs

P.S. I know we had our differences in the past, but I do want to thank you a lot for the help you have given me

Thanks. I actually need to update that to include information on the new 360 chipset that is coming out and the new PS3 that is coming out as well.

Can't you just use a HDMI cable? I thought that eliminated the need for an A/V cable.

Yes, it provides both audio and video but not all receivers have HDMI but most have optical so if you wanted 5.1 you would still need to run the optical cable.

Yea, this is what I plan on doing. I have the Logitech Z-5500 5.1 set, and will need to use an optical cable as well.
