Questions on games for kids for Nintendo DS

A few months back my 4yr old "lost" her Leapster LMax game/educational handheld in Florida. It pretty much devastated her. Her birthday is in a few weeks and we were going to replace the Leapster for her, but then I thought of getting a DS for her instead. But I'm not sure what is all out there for a 5yr old girl game wise. She, of course, loves princess stuff. animals, and above all coloring and writing.

Whats out there for educational games for kids? Or princess games? I assume Dogz and junk is on the DS right?

Any input is appreciated.
Thanks.

I wouldn't get a 5 year old a DS. I have a few cousins who are ages 5-8 and they are MIND CONTROLLED by having a DS.

Get her something educational if you can, or something that won't hold such a fixture in her life

we can and will regulate her usage

There's a ton of "girlie" games for the DS - look for anything that ends with a Z - catz, dogz, ponyz, babyz. But I'd avoid those, maybe because I'm a bit biased, but I'd rather get her "good" games instead of ones that are stereotypically tailored for the little girl demographic.

I'd recommend Nintendogs as a start. At 5 she can probably play New Super Mario Brothers (I know I played the NES version around that age). Cooking Mama might also be good as it's just doing repetitive motions and learning patterns.

5 is a little young, but the younger they start the more accustomed they will be to it as they get older.

after posting this I did find a repsonse to a similar question on a forum:

"I have a 5 yr old who plays my DS all the time. I'm getting a new one this year and passing mine along to her. So far she likes: Nintendogs, Baby Pals, Cooking Mama, Crayola Treasure Adventures, Petz Bunnyz (any of the Petz games is good), Build-a-Bear Workshop, Disney Friends, Smart Kids Gameclub, etc..."

The Crayola and the Build-a-Bear are slam dunks. Those 2 things are like heaven on earth for her.

I think you should get her a psp and then get her all of the grand theft auto games. Classic games right there...
