Questions on Distributed Computing

I just finished reading the "shameless recruiting" message on one of the other forums🙂

I don't think I quite follow though... What is distributed computing? Are you given work to do for these projects, or do you just let those doing the work use your computer's extra resources? How much computer knowledge do you need to join? From what I could follow, it sounded pretty interesting.

What you do is download a program and install it on your computer. Then the program does the work for you. It downloads a batch of work from the internet and then processes it using your computers leftover cycles, that would otherwise be running the computers idle process, and then sends the results back in a starts over again. You don't need much computer knowledge at all.

How much computer knowledge do you need to join?
Enough to download a file (the client) from a website, and then run it.

do you just let those doing the work use your computer's extra resources
You can control this. Most people set the client to use only idle resources, ie run at a low priority.

Are you given work to do for these projects
Yes and no. Some clients (SETI, RC5, OGR, ... for example) require a download of "Work Units" that you process and return. Some clients (ECCp-109 for example) create their own data. You do have to send the results in though.

Welcome!
