hi guys,

soon in my area, ADSL will be available and i just wanted to ask a few questions. :)

From what i understand it they will install a network card and a 'modem' so it can run over the phoneline right? I may need to install another phone socket as the place i am currently leasing only has one, and it is in the other room. (i currently have a telephone extention cable running thru my place and that is fine.) :)

can i still use the phone extension cable to connect the phone and adsl modem? will this affect the performance noticably? if this isn't possible can i keep the modem near the phone socket and just a longer piece of cat5 utp cable (i asume this is how they are connected)?

I believe with ADSL i will have a static ip number? Should i install firewall software and should this be done before or after i have adsl installed? also which firewall software should i use?

anything else i should know..? :)

thank you. :)

I am too :) can't wait :D

you need a network card in your PC (just a normal Ethernet card will do, try finding an old 10 Mbit card, you won't need a 10/100 Mbit anyway, it shouldn't be more than $20), and a wire will go from that to an ADSL router or some sort of funny modem. It varies a bit. The technician will set up the crap for you so who cares ;)

you won't nessecarily get a static IP but I know I am getting it with my provider......this is crap in one way (if you're banned from some place - YOU'RE BANNED!), but it's also neat as you can set up a server and such.

I'll look into getting a firewall for my own personal safety, it's probably a wise thing to do. I've already been ICMP ping flooded some times by an assface from IRC, so it'd probably be smart to shell out a little cash on a good firewall :)

Try searching the forums for "firewall" and you'll find some nice posts :)

ADSL goes over the phone line a extra 5 feet of rj11 will have no effect, phone extension is ok

As for the rest talk to your provider, some use ethernet nic, some ATM nics, Some internal DSL pci modems, others USB DSL modems
