questions for those w/ invisible fences for pets

I bought a house that was prewired with Invisible Fence(tm) by the previous owners. I just recently started looking for the unit/collars, and the Invisible Fence brand ones are really expensive...I'd assume other brands will work with the wiring? Is it worth to buy the expensive stuff? Actually any input on this would be great.

Most collars will be too small to fit your neck though, you will have to test it using a smaller diameter appendage.
