Ok, I just downloaded the client last night, and started cracking on a K6-210 with 64 megs ram. And now I have formulated a couple questions.

1)Does 1 percent per hour sound unreasonably slow?

2)How often are the stats updated. We are still behind swiss and observer on the seti page.

1%/hour IS slow. You have the graphics disable, assuming its the GUI, right?

Don't worry abuot how often stats are updated at the diff S@H pages....Hellburner takes care of it all ;)

Did you set it up to run as a screen saver or to run all the time?

If all the time, is there a green radio telescope in your task bar? If you doubleclick on the telescope, you will have a menu called "settings" with "preferences" as an option.

Are you running other programs that would steal cycles from SETI? I once had a problem installing a client and it installed as a screensaver and then reinstalled as a run all the time client. I turned the screensaver off and it ran just fine after that.

We need to have more info to be able to answer your questions ...

Michael

ps - welcome to the SETI team!

I have it set up to run all the time, and I double click on the green satalite and it pops up this nifty window that shows a constantly changing 3d graph. I am not running hardly anything on this computer, no virus checker, no mobo monitor. Just ICQ netdetect, diamond video card manager, and seti.

p.s a little better than a percent an hour now. 11.1% in the last 9hr 40 min

Go into your screen saver settings for S@H and check the blank screen box, after 0 minutes. that will disable the graphics whether they are displayed or not.

As for the stats just check here in the forums. Everyday Hellburner is kind enough to list them for us here:) since the seti team stats pages are way behind.:(

strates, those graphics take up more than half of the processor time seti uses. turn them off for much better performance. when i first started i had the graphics running all the time on my pro233, took 3 days to do a WU, then i got smart and turned them off, went to under a day.

is there a way to turn them off in the gui. I turned them off in the screen saver, I am now at 21% after 13 hours

Just do what Hellburner said, which is:

<< Go into your screen saver settings for S@H and check the blank screen box, after 0 minutes. that will disable the graphics whether they are displayed or not. >>

Then make sure you actually close the GUI window (hit the X when it's maximized) rather than minimize it. Although it seems like you killed SETI, you actually didn't and it will start running again when the screensaver kicks on.

I should just point out that as well as the 'blank screen ' option ,you should know that SETI likes these things to run optimaly (not incl v2.7x beta clients).
Big ,fast L2 cache
High FSB speed
Low memory/chipset latency
Good FPU

Your K6 has a relativley weak FPU & slow L2 cache.I would expect WU times of around 24-26 hrs with EDO RAM .
(reread you post ,is your K6 set at 2x105MHz with SDRAM? ,if so then it'll be much quicker than the above time)
BTW You'll have a much better idea of WU times when you've done about 5 of them :)

Oh yeah ,welcome to the search & our team :D

Personally I don't even have SETI set to be a screen saver at all. In the preferences I have it set to run all the time. Can't even tell it's running since it's a low priority on the system. I can leave it running while playing games and don't notice a difference. This way it uses every possible cycle it can get that's not being used.

Assimilator: I can not remember what exactly I set it at, this computer has been sitting at my grandparents for a long time, But I think I used 2.8 x 75. But thanks for the info, I finally realized why mine is turtling along.
