There is nothing like a good slap to those damn liberals! But please give positive input to the thread.

Hopefully repubs will get back to Barry Goldwater Republicanism and fiscal conservatism and stay away from the religious conservatism that has made them so intolerant and unthinking. If this happens, Mitt Romney or Huckabee may lead the way for them in 2012.

Why would you think Huckabee would want to move away from religious conservatism? He's the epitome of the religious conservatism movement.

Ow, the Republicans bitch slapped by one of their own AGAIN.

Call him crazy if you want, but he voted against the Iraq war. Most of the Democrats can't even say that.

I only disagree with him on two issues:
1. Iraq war - call me biased but as a descendant of a country that was saved by US warmongering I support the Iraq war and its cost
2. His views on monetary policy - as an economics major i can tell you with strong certainty RP is a lunatic when it comes to his view of getting rid of the Fed and going back to the gold backed dollar.

My pick for 2012 Romney/Jindal

Do you think the influence of moderates and the drifting away from party principles were the main reasons the GOP lost in 2006 and 2008? Why do you think the GOP lost in 2006 and 2008?

How do you think the current economic crises should be address by the Federal government? Do you think the Federal government should be involved at all?

I am curious about what Republicans are thinking after last week's election. And I have not heard any Republican proposals for addressing the current economic crisis.

It would be great if this tread did not devolve into another liberal vs conservative flame and personal attacks.

I think the GOP is in a state of transition, so I'm not certain who the leaders are.

The GOP lost in 2006 because they stuck too hard on social policy that most democrats and moderates didn't consider important while getting beaten stupid over the War in Iraq. They lost in 2008 because of Bush. McCain got out-funded by at least triple and still managed to keep the race at least interesting. Without Bush, and the lingering animosity against him, the race would have been undoubtedly tighter.

I'll say it again, Bush, not the economic crisis, which was a complete bipartisan failure, lost the race. Bush had lost all creidbility and most voters were all too happy to push their discontent onto the administration.

The current crisis... I don't know where to begin. There's a much larger crisis going on, and as long as we continue to only look out how to get out of our latest pickle or ride out the current bubble, we're going find ourselves repeating the same mistakes.

We've got to cut spending by nixing entitlement programs and bringing our troops home quickly. A return to a more isolationist military paradigm is necessary. Overall, we need to encourage ACCOUNTABILITY - both at the personal level and at the government level. If we can accomplish this, we can bring in more tax revenue by increasing the tax base (don't work, don't eat), at the same time as cutting expenses.

Some ideas - We can't continue to keep paying out Social Security at the same age - people are living longer. An extra 10 years of life expectancy should not imply an extra 10 years of retirement. Unemployment insurance should be privatized and made optional to employees.

It's time to get tactical. We've got to fix this right and pay off some of our existing debts before we talk about borrowing more money. Our current system is not sustainable.
