Warez site offer copies of programs. I realize it is not right because the makers of the programs do not receive compensation for the hard work that they put in making the program. Although, some of the programs out today are hundreds of dollars. I can see where some people who WOULD be willing to pay for the program might download it to try it first. I also realize that unfortunately some people never buy the program. If these sites are illegal do people get arrested, sited or lose their ISP service for downloading programs from warez sites?

I have a few comments... I have used warez programs and games before. Why? Because I have bought and been really screwed too many times before. I would not buy a car without test driving it first, same with software. They are usually a lot of money (relatively speaking since I am a student), and I want to make sure that a program will do what I want it to do before I pay. I always buy a program I use and that works as it is supposed to. I played a warez copy of Halflife before there were any reviews out and I loved it and so I bought a copy. I bought Unreal the week it came out, and suffered for over a year as they did not patch the bugs that were rampant in that game. (nor did they add OGL support which they promised within a month of release) I will never ever ever buy another Epic game again because of that fiasco (and I will never use a warez copy of anything they ever make ever again). If I had tried a warez copy I would have known it was not yet finished (still isnt since they abandoned it to work on UT). As for warez sites, generally all that happens is their ISP shuts them down and that is the end of it. very very rarely will you ever see anyone be charged unless they are selling the programs and are living in a country with laws against piracy.

I don't go to Warez sites anymore cause I don't have any use of those programs anymore.

Here are some games I wasted my money on (total piece of sh!t games):

Privateer 2 (total BS, even had to buy a new mouse, so I can get dos drives)
Shattered steel (old, and nasty game)
Retribution (What was I thinking?)
Star Ranger (Don't even ask)

Those are mostly old games. Some of the new once like Mech warrior 3, UT, Rogue squadron etc.. were pretty good.

I'd rather try out a game from a warez site before buying the full version (cause warez usually have hacked, slashed pos games)

Oh, I'd never pay for sh!t programs like Gozilla! :)

I do not believe that warez sites are an issue here. Ppl tend to download the whole game and are therefore not forced into buying the full retail version. There are some however who after dl'g warez do go out and buy the original, pyr for instance. Insofar as testing the software before you buy it is concerned I think this should go without saying. That is why the developers release trial and demo software.

You should use these to judge if you like the software or not. I appreciate that not all the functions may be available in the trial/demo versions therefore it might not convince the user that the software is a worthwhile purchase. To resolve this in steps have been put in place to release 'time restricted' software and some developers adopt this method as their prefered method of distributing their free software.

Warez is unfortunately open to real abuse because not everyone has a conscience like 'pyr'. Most ppl who use warez do not buy the original. Why should they, they got it for free. Warez sux bigtime, but until developers drop their prices which, will never happen due to the thoughtless few that will continue to produce warez just because they want to, not to be used as a weapon to reduce prices. It will be there whatever. Prices will continue as they are. I have to say £30 - £35 for a game such as UT or Q3A or whatever is not that bad under the circumstances.

If ya like it, Buy it. I don't think that is always necessary to try the software before buying. How many of you do not take Anand's word for it when he gives hardware the thumbs up or a computer publication such as PC Gamer gives a game 90%. it's usually a good guide.

It's a sad but frank state of affairs.

Warez sites are great. If you don't like them don't go to them. Its not like they are giving away top quality reproductions here. They're giving away low grade copies for people who can't afford better. Most of the time you get what you pay for. Just the pain in the ash that they make finally getting to the actual download turns most people away from them anyhow. Click here, vote for our site. Blah blah blah. The software companies and thier families are certainly not going hungry so i see no harm done in downloading a crummy copy that you will probably buy in the end anyhow because of the quality of most of the programs. There is one thing that does piss me off about those sites though and thats when they try to get you or actually succeed in locking you into a porn site that you can't seem to get out of that you never tried to go to in the first place. How the hell do they do that anyways. One minute your looking for photoshop and the next your being asked to pay for Ron Jeremy and Christy Canyons to get it on.

whatever your stance on warez, you must know:

whenever SBA comes up with a dumb stat...like software companies loose $1,000,000 (or whatever amount) because of warez...that stat is total bs. They are assuming that every single person that dowloaded a warez would have bought it if the warez were not available. You and I know that is totally untrue.

I would say maybe 1/100 person would have bought the software if the warez were not available. Most people download warez "just to have it." If it wasn't available, no way they would have bought it instead.

some software is priced ridiculously. 3DS Max is a prime example - $3500 for a piece of software is simply sick. So if I'm gonna learn 3ds max and CS it'll be off warez'd versions, I don't have those kinda money. the sick prices on software would be holding back many potential young people's creativity, had it not been for warez

Guys, why do you need to download the warez to try them out? Isnt that what the demo is for?

Edit And what about game reviews? Dont you guys read those before you buy a game? "Trying out" is not a good enough reason to download warez.

I really wonder why more people or warez sites don't get stopped. Don't the ISP's realize that so many people are running illegal web sites (ftp, napster, etc) The ISP's can easily monitor the network traffic. So, why don't they ban these people from using the internet through there service?

Warez sites on the other hand, there should really be a crack down on them. I suspect that most of these Warez sites get their software from the inside. When I mean inside, companies who acquire software from the market used to test hardware (chip, graphics, and other HW manufacturers), that employees then steal for illegal use. Another example which definitly happens is employees who work in retail stores who now have access to a large selection of software. If there was less piaratecy(SP?), image how much less software would cost. I understand that people do want to try the software before they spend their hard earned money, but thats what demos and trial versions are for.

Just my two cents.

ISP's can't just spy on people unless they have a reasonable reason to do so. Say if a person is sucking up way more bandwidth than usual they might have a suspician but otherwise they can't monitor and target one person for no reason.

Quite often demos dont tell you all that much about a program. With regard to games, you only get the bits that the programmers wish you to see.
As for reviews, pfft. They are Ok for a read, but would you buy a car from a review? I listened to reviews and rushed out and bought Diablo2, and now i am suffering the consequences. Also many web sites get their sponsorship from software publishers/retailers (some even have online shops associated directly to the review site)and so have an innate bias towards giving games somewhat hyped reviews.

My software budget allows me to buy one game a month. Sometimes i will d/l a warez version to help me decide. For example if i want to buy a soccer game, i may d/l two and buy the better one (deleting both warez copies afterwards). As strange as it may sound, i actually buy more games by playing warez versions first. For example Shogun and Age of Empires 2. I wouldn't have bought Shogun based on a review, but bought it the day after i d/l the warez version. I didnt like AOE 1, but i bought AOE2 soon after i played the warez version.

Warez versions are usually substandard, hard to patch(update) and lacking in music and video. Diablo 2, for me, is saved mainly by its fanatstic movies.

I dont believe in downloadig a library of warez to keep. But as a trial tool, i would buy fewer games without them.

I agree with damocles, warez games you can download are crap. always something wrong because the cracker has screwed up, problems with patching, and no sound+music, which IMO, is a great part of the game.

damocles: Your statements are very reasonable and I tend to agree. But unfortunately, not everyone is like you, I believe most people still download the warez to keep, unlike your purpose of trying out.

I have a 56k modem, so the idea of weeks spent d/l sound and movie addons doesnt appeal to me. I would rather get a feel for the game and either buy it or delete it.

If you are abot to bash me for d/l warez to try out...

So what is the final word guys? Have you EVER heard of a person being arrested, sited or lost their ISP service for downloading a program from a warez site? There are two programs that I am trying to decide on. One has a demo that is real limited the other does not. I WILL buy the one I want, but I do not want to get in trouble for downloading from one of these sites. I do not have any experience with this stuff. Thanks!

<< How many of you do not take Anand's word for it when he gives hardware the thumbs up or a computer publication such as PC Gamer gives a game 90%. it's usually a good guide. >>

The thing about that is taste. With games like music there is the persons taste that comes into play. Even if a musician is first rate not everyone is going to like the song or piece of music even though the musician is very talented. Same with games. Some people just don't like some games even though the game maybe very well designed of programmed. It's all in taste. With Anand and other good hardware reviwers though to me it a different story. If the say motherboard is stable and never locks and is very fast in every test and has all the features you want then I can't see why someone would not buy that board based on Anands reviews. Sure some people like certain brands over another brand but good is good. Everything I have ever bought based on Anands review of that product I was very happy with. The only thing is Anand and the other reviewers can't go out and buy 100 of the same motherboard and test them all so if the company makes a lot of bad boards but the one Anand gets for testing happens to be a good sample it's not his fault as he was reporting what the board he tested did.

With games I just try to borrow the game from a friend before I buy it to be sure I will like it.
