Join SETI :)

As for all your questions, most of the projects are basically the same answers...

1. Yes. You can install on as many computers as you like
2. The programs won't make any negative impact on your using the computer. The applications are set to IDLE priority, so they only use the CPU when other programs are not.
3. You can if you want, but there really is no need. The only time I shut mine down is to run windows update (it sometimes hangs with stuff running) and disk defragmenter, since it sometimes restarts a lot with programs running.
4. You shouldn't need to do anything specific for any programs I know of.
5. Why should you join? I do it for fun, as I run SETI. And we MIGHT actually find aliens :D As for some of the other programs, they should help find cures for diseases and such.

If you do decide to go with Seti, you might wish to reconsider the last 2 as crunching systems, i do not believe that seti runs well ( if at all) on a 486Sx since it has no math coprocessor, and even with the CLI ( the fastest client for Seti) a P-23 would be looking at well over 24 hours per wu. the pII's will do ok and the Athlon Xp's will do Verrrry nicely.

If you chose to run the 486 and P-1 there are some DC projects that do well on older processors, but another of our TeAm mates will have to comew forward with that info, as I am really only (reasonably) knowledgable about Seti@home.

Seti is a good project and lots of fun in these the last days of the project. We are trying to catch up with the number 5 team in the world and stay ahead of the number 7 team. This makes things interesting as we are all scrambling.
Any of the projects would be great if SETI doesn't appeal to you.
The main thing is to have fun.

Thanks for your responses.

The meaning of question number 2 is how much help would I be to the project (SETI or any other ones)?

I am just curious of the answer. as these machines will be idling all day - and yes the 486 one was listed only to be funny ;) I wouldnt consider using that - it stays in its rightful home in the closet ;)...

I may get flack from the wife leaving all of them on all the time, however the top 5 are almost always on during the day...
