questions about xp pro's remote desktop

I'm trying to figure out what is the best option for remote access. I am somewhat familiar with PC Anywhere & VNC, though some of the differences xp pro's built-in remote desktop offer are of value to this situation. I want to confirm some of the functionality as I have little experience with remote desktop.

Breaks down so that I need these features:
1) 4 computers behind a nat (so different ports for port forwarding in the nat router)
2) ability to print either to a local or remote printer when remotely connected.

Can I do this with remote desktop? Thanks.

Are you meaning that you want 4 users to connect to the same computer at the same time?
You'll need to have Server 2003 for that. XP Pro only allows one user to connect at a time, regardless of if that user is sitting at the computer locally, or is trying to connect remotely. XP is a single user only os.

But yeah, if you're just wanting to be able to connect to four different computers that are behind your firewall, that's entirely possible.

Like you say, just forward different ports to different computers. RDP Uses port 3389 by default (I presume this is changeable, though I'm not sure). Forward say external port 3333 to port 3389 on your first computer, forward port 3334 to port 3389 on your second computer, etc.

your link to log onto each individual computer would be your IP followed by your port number. IE: cubby1223.com:3333 to log onto the first computer if you'd forwarded port 3333 to port 3389 on your first computer.

When you set up your the RDP client you have an option to bring local printers to the session. This is what u'd use to be able to print from the remote computer to your local computer.

That said, Only WinXP Pro and Pro64 have the RDP server. All varients of windows have the RDP client available (Though you have to download it for 98 and 2000)

Hope that helps. If you have any other q's, just ask.

Just a small clarificaiton to Kenazo's post, yes you can change the default port via a registry key. However, just setting up the port forwarding like he suggested will work fine and you won't have to change the port locally.
