Questions about Windows Professional

I don't know the Windows family of OS's very well, and my friend just bought Windows 2000 Professional because the store he was at didn't have any other Windows operating systems. I thought that Professional was based on NT, and I thought that NT had trouble with some games and drivers. Is my friend screwed, should he take back Win Pro, or is he fine?

Keep in mind that I'm sure that it will run Office okay, but the idea here is to play Counterstrike and other games.

Thanks,

Jay

win2k is the best MS OS ever released. It is based on the NT kernel (NT 5.0) there are some games that you cant play, but for the most time you can play anything, CS and TFC.

NT4 will play very little, NT5 (Win2000) will play almost everything. There are a few that won't work, but not many.
CounterStrike plays very well.

You don't use the same drivers in Win2000 as you do in Win98/ME, but there shouldn't be "problems" exactly, you just have to use different ones.

I have used Win2000 Pro as my only OS for nearly a year now, and it's never given me any problems on the gaming front.

Windows XP (microsoft's next big OS, for both the Home and Professional versions) is 100% based on Windows 2000. 2000 is NT 5.0, XP is 5.1.

So obviously Microsoft has confidence in NT5's ability to play games, and do everything else.

XP is a bit better than 2000 in that regard but not much, no your friend is fine.
If you had Windows NT4 Workstation you'd be in trouble, but Win2000 Pro is a good OS for everything.

To sum it up, what DAM said: win2k is the best MS OS ever released.
