Questions about: Water Cooling, Peltier Units and Heatpipes

Hello All,

Right now I have a beautiful Pentium 4 1.8a(o/c to 2.4) system in a Lian-Li case, however due to me getting the boot out of the basement of the house (where it ran under 40°c even at full load) However now that im upstairs and the hot weather is slowly kicking in its running alot hotter (it got up to 53° at full load! 🙁 )

Im running a Thermaltake P4 Dragon Orb 478 right now (with the HML switch) and the only bearable level is L of course! 😀 (i still dont know how you guys deal with your delta screamer!!!)

I'm thinking of ordering the Blizzard Z4 Water Cooling Kit from overclockershideout.com and i was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this water cooling kid (amd or intel) and how much of a temperature drop you think i would get running just this kit.

secondly, i see you can run a peltier unit with a waterblock to chill you CPU even more, yet you have to waterproof your motherboard to prevent condensation damage. is this really worth it? how cold are we talking about here?! 😀 ... also, i only have a 500watt power supply with ALOT of thing(lights, drives, fans, newq, you name it its in my box!) there are a few different wattages of peltiers, 80, 122 and 156, which of these would be best for a p4 northwood yet would not require an additional power supply?


last but not least. what about heatpipe technology? does an alpha or swiftech heatsink still beat a heatpipe? and the only model i've ever seen is made by coolermaster for the athlon. does anyone make a pentium4 heatpipe?

there are formulas that will tell you how much of a temp drop a certain wattage peltier will give you from a given current temperature. you can find them on www.overclockers.com articles. (maybe somebody can give you an exact link onthis one)
one thing is certain, from about 50-60C (which is pretty much what ocers get without peltiers), you can drop easily to 0 C, even below. you will have to get certain programs that wil monitor your cpu temp and make the CPU work when the temp is too low, so it raises it above freezing.
the peltier will also add extra heat. how much can also be found out from a formula (given in that overclockers.com article).

Power Supply. you will need a separate power supply for the peltier. it will probably need about 24-28 V (this your ATX power supply wont provide).
you can see prices for these kinda power supplies online, ill look for a link.
they also sell at radioshack, they can order powerfull powersupplies for you, they usually have in stock low DC powersupplies, that are too weak for your peltier.

Some places sell 12V Peltiers that you can connect to your regular ATX power supply, provided you have enough power (and you'll need quite a bit).
 
I = W/V (or whatever, i'm tired)

current = wattage of peltier/ 12V

So make sure the +12V line has enough to support that current and the rest of your devices.
