Questions About VIA's 4-in-1 Drivers

Hey everyone,
Well I'm going to be picking up an AMD TBird system shortly and an Asus A7V133 Motherboard. Here are my questions, I'm new to AMD/VIA and I have a few questions about the 4-in-1 drivers. I've read many times on this forum that installing the Bus Mastering drivers causes some CDRWs to stop writing properly... What exactly should be installed when using the 4 in 1 drivers? what should not be installed?

I'm new to the via chipset scene as I've always used Intel, but now I'm making the switch, so what exactly are the procedures I should follow when updating VIA's drivers? An explanation of the drivers and procedure would be greatly appreciated.

No they don't, install all of them.
I have never had any problems with them, not even the Beta one's.
Im currently using the 4.28 BETA which seem to work great, no problems whatsoever.

The 4 in 1's really help with stability and speed. I went week before I realized i forgot them. After install my 3dmark score had doubled.
 
That's basically it, other than do it like this which should give no problems at all
1. Install OS
2. Install Via 4 in 1
3. DirectX 7a or 8a
4. Install Video Drivers
5. Install Other drivers
6. Install Applications

Restart after every Install, always restart. Some people don't do it and mess up everything 😉

I asked this on another thread, but it died before someone replied.

I've heard people say that they install the BusMaster drivers as VxD and not as miniport because they are more stable. Exactly how do you do that? How do you choose or what is the procedure to install them as VxD?

All those problems you hear with teh 4in1 drivers are with the unofficial, leaked, beta drivers. Just stick with the official released, and u'll be fine.

but no doubt, after a while of owning a via board, ur gonna try to tweak the hell outta that thing, including the using latest leaked 4in1's.
 
i heard alot of people say that don't install via's 4-1 driver
I'm currently using driver's that come with MS windows
and in device manager it say via driver
should i install them?
my system is rock solid right now
 
Yea, you should install the latest drivers if you do 3D stuff. If you only use programs such as PhotoShop, Word, then u can get away without using the latest 4in1.

But if you ever play any kind of 3D game, then it's highly recommended that u install the latest 4in1. Many Videocards won't function properly without them.

BTW, the .4.25a are the latest official 4in1.

 
I was one of the few that had problems with them. The Via drivers are fine, it's the busmaster driver that causes problem. To get the drives running in DMA mode, it makes them recognized as SCSI drives in System Properties, which causes some problems with burners and dvd players. I'm just waiting it out until Microsoft releases SP2.
 
So is there an issue with getting drives to run in DMA mode? I have 2 HDs (IBM/Quantum) and a DVD and CDRW all of which run in DMA mode, am I going to have issues trying to get the drive to work in DMA mode? Under Windows 2000 Pro, and Windows 98SE? (I dual boot), Thanks

I run a dual boot and have the Via 4-1 4.28 beta installed and haven't had any problems with them including busmaster.
I have 3- IBM drives, a CDRW TDK, a CDRom and no problems.
I use a Promice ata 100 controller for my 30 gig IBM's
 
i install via 4-1 drive
and see a 15% increase on my hd benchmark
but i was unable to run 3dmark2000
i have uninstall 3dmark200
would reinstall help?
 
But my question is: Are there issues trying to get drives to work with DMA when using 4-in-1 drivers?

I originally had a problem enabling DMA for my CDrom and CDRW drives on my onboard IDE channels. I am using 4in1 4.28beta. Problem was not with the drivers however but with the an IRQ conflict. The system showed the resources were shared but did not indicate a conflict. In an effort to free additiona IRQ's I disable a COM port and forced the board to reallocat resources. After that I was able to enable DMA on both drives. In addition my system boots quite a bit faster and my CDrom benchmarks improved dramatically.
