Questions about the Samsung 970p

As my search for a wonderful gaming CRT comes to a very dissapointing close, I think I have decided to head into LCD territory. I am mainly interested in the Samsung 970p as I am a very heavy gamer. From what I have read, I believe this one will do what I want it to do, but I have a few questions about it.

1. I noticed on Samsung's website that they actually have a picture of a black 970b. Are the black ones going to be released in the US?

You can see what i am talking about here: http://www.samsung.com/products/monitor/index.asp

2. Now, I am pretty ignorant when it comes to LCDs. I have checked a lot of them out and BestBuy and CompUsa, but they have around 10 monitors hooked up to one computer, and they all look terrible. Also, my friend has a pair of 13" LCD panels sitting right beside each other. The color is horrible and everything has this blurriness to it. They were relatively cheap and I think they are made by proview. So, I hope these things arent the case with the 970p.(don't make fun of me. I am new to all this LCDstuff:eek: )

3. The 60hz refresh rate concerns me because i have been so used to running 85hz. I know LCD is completely different technology than CRT, so is there going to be a big difference? Am I going to have seizures when I sit in front of it?

Ok, thats all. Thanks for your responses ahead of time.:)

1. How do you know that's the 970P? :) I heard of other-color 770Ps/970Ps as well. Not sure.

2. 13" LCDs? They make 'em that small? :p Yes, those are most likely awful compared to the 970P. The 970P is the best-looking 19" LCD you can get, and with a decent response time.

3. No, LCDs never flicker. I believe the 970P goes up to 75 Hz anyway. They just use it to maintain compatiblity with the VESA display standard.

Thanks for your response.:)

Well, the base is exactly like the 970p, so I just made an assumption. Also, I went to google image search and typed in the model and everything, and one of this images was a tiny black 970p labeled "970p". The link of the image was to a japanese site.

That's good to know about the refresh rate. Perfect.

Thanks, again!

That's what marketing says... In fact they can flicker, just differently than CRT. Other than defective back lighting, flickering can occur due the trick called FRC (and maybe even without FRC due poor quality source driving). FRC is used to seemingly increase the numer of colors by rapidly vibrating the color of pixels between the two nearest colors that it can really display. This is mostly important for 6 bit panels. Also, D-SUB connection can cause some noise-like flickering, but that hardly bad for the eyes.

And, regarding 970P; it is a 6 bit panel (as opposed to the common belief that says it's 8 bit), but it uses still dithering and not FRC. So it doesn't flicker at all, as far as I can see (I'm using it for a while).
