Ok I just got a 3.06 p4, in my device manager under CPU's in WindowsXP Pro it says there are 2 3.06's, is this the hyperthreading taking affect and acting like theres 2 CPU's?

Also when I go to start up Asheron's Call (a over 3 year old game) it pops up a 3d initilization error, but I just close it and I can play the game fine, I never got that error on my 2.4 P4, could it be the game has trouble with hyper threading maybe? Also I can play all my newer games just fine, Quake 3, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal II Awakening.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated, thanks!

no where in my post did I say I expected a performance boost from hyper threading :)

Can anyone answer my questions?

yes hyper threading will list 2 processors

I did that just now heh, problem didn't go away.

Here its stuff from the error thing generated from WindowsXP

Error signature

AppName acd3ds~1.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.0 ModName: cpuinf32.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00001bf0

Anyone have any ideas on what any of that suggests?

Try downloading any updates you find from intel. cpuinf32.dll is a library used to detect cpu speed, capabilities, etc... , possibly it can't determine whta kind of processor you have. You can also search the web and try downloading a new copy of cpuinf32.dll from sites taht host it. You may have a corrupt one.

well Xp detects the CPU and so does my BIOS and it shows 2 CPU's in the device manager and I can run all my other games just fine. So Im correct in assuming its not a bad CPU right? Also where do you think I could DL the new .dll for that file?

-Edit- ya I do have a 9700 Pro

Anyway, I think everyone's dead on in their replies. Doesn't sound like HT is causing the problems with AC - I'd try updating cpuinf32 and see if that resolves it. Of couse, you could always just reinstall WinXP and have it over with:D

Update, well cpuinf32.dll isn't a system file in WindowsXP, I did a file search and only 2 things had it in them, Asheron's Call and Half Life. I Deleted it from my Asheron's Call directory and poof no more error, went in game and everything was fine.

Thanks again to all the great Anandtech board people for helping me diagnose and fix yet another comp problem, you guys always come through :)
