Questions about taking GRE test

Well about a year ago, I checked on what I needed to do to go to grad school (before I graduated) and I was told by some type of advisor or counselor that I didn't need to take the GRE test. Now I'm putting in my app, and I see it as a requirement, so I email the director of the program and he tells me it's a state requirement (FL). Does anyone know if this is the case? I'm so tired of idiots giving out wrong information and not being held accountable...

And also about the test... is there anything I should be worried about? I don't believe the program is too exclusive. What are the ranges of scores and what should be considered normal etc?

Should I worry about it? Is it difficult? Anything else I need to know?

i took the GRE in 2001. how long can i use the scores before they expire? i def need to apply for a grad school :(

but i been so lazy... its been 4 years without school for me


OP: when i took it there was only verbal, math and logic sections. now i think there's a new writing section.

similar to SAT each section was 800 points, however i did not study for it at all, i forgot the exact points but i got a 40% percentile on verbal (im chinese been since i was 10 year old so im not born here), 95% on math and 99% on the logic section or whatever it is they called them.

whether or not its required depends on the school. mine said it was highly recommended. But they accepted me before i could take the test.

start by visiting the bookstore and buying a GRE preparation book.

The range that your score needs to fall in obviously depends on the programs you are applying to. $105 is cheap, compared to the cost of the GMAT

great job.. i did similar in 1998.. but like 95% on logic... and im asian too :)

the math part on it is easy. covers geometry, algebra, and beginner pre-calc. this should be a snap. the verbal part is just like SAT verbals. rent a practice book from the library and start working out the verbal sections. the writing part - look at the practice book and it'll list what the judges are grading for.

i took it in early 2004 and got a 800 math, 600 verbal, 4.5/6 writing

I think the verbal section is significantly more difficult than the SAT verbal

like i said before..it depends on the school you are applying to. the school you are currently in wont have a clue.

just call up the school's admissions department and get a real answer. their website will say teh same thing.

I go in on tuesday, so I'm going to speak to admissions and the graduate studies dept. I am now told that it is a STATE REQUIREMENT. I know we're probably all in different states, but has anyone else heard of this? Especially anyone in FL?

Thanks, I will look for practice book if I find that I do have to do this (I assume that I probably will need to do so). I never took pre-calc myself, it was never required in college or high school, gotta love how they put that on there. I'm not going into something that requires that knowledge (although I am taking grad stat already as a non-degree seeking student and passing with flying colors).

I know that some DEPARTMENTS in major state schools (not sure about your state, dept, etc.) require it whereas others do not. If they say they want it, just take it. You also do not wantto be known as "the jerk who argued with us about whether he should have to take it" if the program is at all competitive.

I'm not worried about the competition. Even if it was competitive, I'm applying for the Spring 2006 semester which is forever away anyhow.

And what is CAT format?
