Questions about sound cards

My comp was recently hit by a lightning strike (it even went through the surge protector) and i think it fried the integrated sound card on my mobo because i can't get any sound at all now. I don't want to buy a new mobo just for another sound card, so i was wondering if adding another sound card would work.

If i can fix my problem with another card, do you guys have any recommendations? I need a card that can put out good enough sound for DVDs (no gaming on this rig) and it needs to be pretty cheap. I've heard good enough things about this Chaintech and it seems like a great price.

Thanks.

Yes adding in a PCI sound card would work. It really depends what you do, however since you were using onboard before i assume your not an audiophille :p You can get some really cheap sound cards that will give you sound... But personally i would get an audigy 2 ZS OEM, i got one for £25 here, which is nothing. That was a year and a half ago, its compatible, easy to install and wont give you any problems, unlike some of the cheaper cards ive had in the past.

Thanks for the quick reply. The audigy is a bit expensive for a PC without much need for high quality sound, but i think i might get it for my new one.

Yeah, that Chaintech is a good card. Using digital out or stereo it's very good. The thing it's not so great at is gaming, but if you're not doing that then it should be a good bet.
