I recently ordered RADSL and I have to share that connection between 2 computers. The package I ordered comes with 2 Static IPs. I currently have a fast ethernet network up and runnin with 2 computers on it, boith runnining win98. The NICs are 10/100.

My question is, how do I set it up with the 2 static IPs so bnoth comps will be on the same connection?

Also, what is the advantages/disadvantages of using static IPs vs. dynamic IPs for sharing DSL llines?

THanks!

If you have static IP's for each comp, then you don't need to run ICS or a software proxy or use a router.
Can use just a hub/switch.

The slight diasadvantage is that you may be able to be hacked more easily since you are at the same address the whole time.

Regardless though, with DSL or cable modems, it's best to use a firewall either software or hardware.

As for setting them up, your ISP should give you your addresses, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS servers, and domain name.
In the Properties for TCP/IP of each comp. you enter all that info and you are good to go.

How is your current network set up?
Hub/switch?

If so, DSL line>Modem>Switch/hub>computers.
To hook the modem up to a hub, you will need a crossover cable, you can use a regular patch cable if connecting to switch.

Thanks for the info...

They are giving me a router, which is the modem.

Currently my network setup is 2 NICs and a 5 port hub.

So, unless the router has a hub/switch built in, you will still need to use the hub.

With a router, you only really need 1 IP, unless for some reason your's doesn't do NAT.
