been debating between building a NAS/fileserver for my home to stream 1080p and am split between several options.

I was going to bite the bullet and buy some type of synology solution. looking at any 4 disk enclosure the price seems to be pretty steep. add in the cost of 3TB hard drives and i'm looking at almost $1000, with no ability to add more than 4 disk drives in the future (although i admit that it will take awhile for me to fill up 12TB of data!)

The pro's of this setup include the ability for it to "just work", and low power consumption.

On the flip side, I have already an old coolermaster centurion mid atx case, an efficient seasonic 300W power supply lying around. If purchased a celeron G530 sandy bridge or hell even the ivy bridge pentium and h61 motherboard + ram, it would end up being much less than buying a synology.

But here are where i have some questions: How much more power would this thing burn?
currently I have a windows 7 desktop where i stream from. it's asleep, and whenever my laptop accesses it, it wakes from lan which is really nice. would the synology or any of the DIY nas OS's have this option?
also, how hard is it to set up a DIY nas/fileserver? i've read some threads and it seems like people are having a tough time but really not going into detail.

thanks!

For something that will be on 24/7/365, you will want ECC. However there are some cheap semi-documented workarounds using Core i3's with mobos that support ECC. Higher upfront costs but a little less power usage than AMD. The cheap AMD solution is to get an ASUS mobo (most or all of them support ECC) and a cheapo AMD CPU (a Sempron 140 or higher, EXCEPT for FM1/2 CPUs which do NOT support ECC).
