Questions about setting up an FTP

Hello. I need some help setting up an FTP, so someone can upload a video to me. It's about a 50 mb video. I have an FTP client that I use to upload stuff to a site, but I don't have anything set up to allow someone to upload something directly to me. How would I go about this? What software do I need? Is there another solution other than FTP because I'm not even sure that this person has an FTP client or knows how to use one.

TIA,

Sal

you will need to setup a ftp server. look at the free alternative software sticky for a ftp server software. a ftp client isn't necessary, you can transfer files through IE, however, you lose some features the ftp client has eg. transfer resume.

How do you send files through IE? I still need to set up an FTP server on my system though, don't I?

Someone mentioned sending files via ICQ. Does anyone know anything about this? I need to receive a 50 mb file and I was wondering if this would be a good way of transferring it. I really don't care how he gets the file to me as long as he can get the file to me.

Thanks again.

Sal

ftp://address

or

ftp://user : password@address - there should not be any spaces between the username, the colon, and the password but since i have a : and a p next to each other, this forum wants to give me a 😛, so that is why my example has a space.

serv-u is free for personal use and is pretty simple to setup. just forward port 21 on your router (assuming you have broadband) to your ftp server machine and have your friend connect. a good client for your friend is filezilla and is free also. again ultravnc works nice too with its transfer feature but if something happens and the whole file doesn't get sent then you need to start from scratch, where with ftp if one of your connections gets messed up it will allow you to ocntinue where you left off.
