Questions about Sempron 64 2800+

I currently have a 2.66 Ghz P4, 533 mhz FSB, from before Hyperthreading was introduced. I am considering putting together a computer with some spare parts I have, but I lack a processor and mobo. The new computer would be for someone who does basic tasks, but I use mine for gaming. I am trying to decide between buying something like a cheap Celeron/mobo combo for the new computer, or upgrading my computer and using my current P4 in the new one I am building.

What I would like to know is if a Sempron 64 2800+ would be faster than my P4 2.66, both at stock speeds and with a little overclocking of the Sempron (I have read they can do 2.4 Ghz without too much problem), and if so, how much faster. If the Sempron would be faster, and I decide to use it to upgrade my current computer, could you also recommend some good motherboards? I would just need a reliable, hopefully somewhat cheap, mobo I could use to overclock the Sempron. The only other requirement is it would have to have an AGP slot, as I just bought a 6800LE that I unlocked, so I don't plan on going to PCI express just yet. Thanks for any help, it is greatly appreciated.

The Sempron is the better CPU in this case because (1.) It is 64 bit (2.) Has more Front Side Bus (3.) Has SSE 3 (4.) They are supposed To Over Clock Like Mad. With some high-end air-cooling they should be able to reach you P4's clock speed or higher.

I recommend a zalman heat sink and artic silver thermal compound.

ZALMAN CNPS7000B-CU 92mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan/Heat sink ? Retail Plus Shipping = $49.98

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound ? OEM Plus Shipping = $12.98

Prices are the ones listed at Newegg.com

well i hope this help's

Well heck, if you want AGP and a Sempron, you're in luck. You should go out and get the socket 754 DFI board, or if you're really in a pinch, pick up the Chaintech vnf-250. I'd recommend the DFI board over it, though.

Otherwise, listen to AMDrulZ over there.

At 2.4 ghz, a Sempron 2800+ would smoke a 2.66 ghz P4, but at stock, the 2.66 ghz P4 is faster.

The sempron will be an improvement over the 2.66 P4 at stock, but not that much of one. Your better off not upgrading.

If you OC to 2.4 though, its a different story, as the performance of the Sempron will defenetly blow the p4 away.

Ok, I am confused by AMDrulZ. Will the stock fan not be enough to OC the Sempron, assuming I don't go past 2.4? Or will any OCing require a new fan? It just seems like if I were to spend $60 on accesories for a $75 processor, I would be better just buying a faster processor to start.

if you're going to spend $50 on a HSFU, get the big typhoon. it pwns the zalman. I'm not sure how good the stock HSFU for the sempron is, but my winnie 3000+ went to 2.6 on stock..

i have my 2800+ at 2.4ghz on the stock hsf right now....and it is 34c under load......so if you dont want to push it past that you should be great....also if you dont want to shell out for the dfi i would suggest the asrock nf3 k8 upgrade....it is like $50 at newegg and it is a good little board i am using it right now till my dfi gets here cause the asrock won't let you go over 300 fsb in the bios....

The big typhoon might cool the Sempron better but it is very large in size. But if you have a large case or are planning on buying one soon go for it. If your case is a little smaller than go for the zalman it will fit a little better.

I read some were it might have been here on anand or maybe it was xbit-labs than the Sempron were able to give a socket 939 Athlon 3800+ a run for its money. When it was over clocked to 2.6ghz but it was the 3400 Sempron I believe but that might help you get a rough idea of the Sempron performance and over clocking potential

Im currently running specs in my sig and it never gets over 36C after hours of Prime95 stress testing. I really love this board but right now its close to the same price as the DFI. However if you plan on using the DFI Lanparty board id suggest getting a decent powersupply cause i hear they suck the juice. My system is currently runnin rock stable with a 350watt Powersupply. Where as the DFI board should be paired with 450Watt or higher depending on what you decide to run with your setup as far as internals.....DVD burner, Power dependant graphics card, multiple harddrives......ect. Although i know of an instance where the .5 increments on the HTT setting will come in handy to reach over 2.6GHZ on a sempron 2800+ chip with the DFI board. But for the money and with my experience with the K8NS Pro board if you have good ram the HTT limitations are minimal at best.
